The Evolution of New Sox Park

Designed for suburban Addison in 1986, New Comiskey Park has struggled to fit its role as the new Sox home across the street from the original at 35th & Shields.  A slow evolution of the ballpark's amenities has taken place since 1991 to better satisfy Sox Fans' expectations.  Here's a chronicling of those changes.

This rendering of New Comiskey Park from 1989 clearly shows the plan to use
green seats, green walls, green bullpens, and a green batter's eye.
Before the ballpark opened in 1991, the plan was changed and all of
them became blue instead.

As late as 1990 the batter's eye was still supposed to be green.
The choice of blue just marched on and on.  The last vestiges of
green was relegated to trim for the arched windows and other
small details around New Comiskey Park.

This Chicago Tribune graphic from 1994 clearly illustrates
the difference in viewing a Sox game from New Comiskey Park
versus the old ballpark across the street.

Architecture reporter Blair Kamin was an early critic of the ballpark
and prophesized the trouble it would face as early as June 1991,
just two months after the ballpark opened.
